The Department of Entomology in Yunnan Agricultural University is one of the main professional teaching and scientific research departments in the College of Plant Protection. Its predecessor was the Teaching and Research Section of Entomology founded in 1938, in the College of Agronomy of Yunnan University. In 1995, the College of Agronomy was founded, the Department of Plant Protection was established in the College, of which the Entomology Teaching and Research Group belonged to. In 2001, the College of Plant Protection was founded, of which the Department of Entomology belongs to.
For years, relied on the irreplaceable biological resources of Yunnan Province, aiming at the forefront of agricultural insect and pest control disciplines at home and abroad, the Department of Entomology has carried out work from the aspects of faculty team construction, discipline construction, talent training and laboratory construction, focused on curriculum construction, actively carried out teaching reform and continuously optimized the teaching system and teaching content. After decades of development and generations of construction, the Department of Entomology has accumulated a fine style of rigorous scholarship, unity and cooperation, and has made important contributions to the teaching and scientific research of entomology in Yunnan Province
1. Faculty introduction
The Department of Entomology has 15 teachers, including 7 professors, 2 associate professors and 6 lecturers, of which 15 with PhD degree, 6 PhD supervisors and 10 master’s supervisors, 2 entitled Middle-aged and Young Academic and Technical Leaders in Yunnan Province, 2 won the Reserve Talents of Middle-aged and Young Academic and Technical Leaders in Yunnan Province, 1 post expert of Yunnan Industrial System, 1 won the Yunnan Education Merit Award, 1 entitled the Famous Teacher in Yunnan Province, 1 entitled the National Scientific and Technological Worker with Outstanding Contributions, 1 entitled Excellent Teacher in Yunnan Province, 1 entitled Yunling Scholar and 1 entitled Yunling Famous Teacher and 1 entitled the Top-notch Talent Youth in the High-level Talent Training Support Plan of Yunnan Province. It is an academic team with reasonable structure, unity and hard work, rigorous scholarship and innovative spirit.
2. Discipline construction
The discipline of agricultural insect and pest control was granted the right to grant a master's degree in 1993, the right to grant a doctor's degree in 2005, the qualification to recruit personnel in the post doctoral research mobile station in 2007, and the famous teacher's studio in 2011, forming a talent training mode integrating the cultivation of undergraduate, master's and doctoral students, the post doctoral research mobile station, university teachers and visiting scholars. It was awarded the key discipline of Yunnan Province in 1998 and the "innovation team of Yunnan Province for agricultural insect and pest control" in 2009; At present, there are 1 excellent course, 2 first-class courses and 1 first-class course in Yunnan Province. Four scientific research and postgraduate training directions including insect classification and systematics, insect physiology and pathology, agricultural biodiversity and integrated pest management, and pest biological control have been set up, and a large number of excellent talents have been trained.
The department has successively undertaken and participated in more than 50 Scientific research projects, such as Projects for International Cooperation, 973 Science and Technology Plan Projects, key projects and general projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Science and Technology Basic Research Projects, the Public Welfare Industry Projects of the Ministry of Agriculture, Yunnan Science and Technology Research Plan, Yunnan Provincial Academy and University Cooperation Projects, Yunnan Agricultural Comprehensive Development Projects, and Projects of Yunnan Tobacco Industry. More than 10 awards was given by the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Science Award of Yunnan Province, Scientific and Technological Progress Award of Yunnan Province and Scientific Research Award of Kunming, and 3 national, provincial and ministerial teaching achievement awards. More than 300 academic papers, 10 monographs and textbooks have been published, and 10 patents are applied.
3. International Cooperation
Personnel training and scientific research cooperation are carrying out with many domestic and foreign universities, such as Iowa State University, California Academy of Sciences and Australian Federal Center for scientific and Industrial Research (CSIRO), which has greatly promoted the discipline development and the quality and level of personnel training of the Department of Entomology.
