The Department of plant pathology originated from the Department of plant pathology of Yunnan University in 1938 and was officially established when the College of plant protection was established in 2001. The discipline of plant pathology in Yunnan Agricultural University has a long history and is one of the most influential disciplines in the University.

The scientific research feature is that with biodiversity as the core, it covers crop disease research and production application projects of Yunnan's main crops such as rice, corn and potato and local characteristic industries such as flowers, tobacco, fruit trees, medicinal materials, tea and coffee.
