Yunnan, located in the essential construction area of "one belt and one road", is a window towards Southeast Asia and South Asia, not only an important exit for China's agriculture exportation, but a border province of the key construction for the major alien invasion species interception zone. To Actively adapt to the rapid growth of national foreign trade and the major demand for establishment of ecological security barrier and regional development of characteristic agriculture in Southwest China, the major Animal and Plant Quarantine began to construct in 2003 in Yunnan Agricultural University, and was approved as a first-class specialty construction site in Yunnan Province in 2020. Taking advantage of the first-class discipline of Plant Protection in Plant Protection College, the major of Animal and Plant Quarantine relies on several teaching and research platforms and off-campus practice bases, such as the State Key Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Biodiversity Resources joint-built by Yunnan Province and Ministry of Education, the National Engineering Research Center for Applied Technology of Agricultural Biodiversity, the Key Laboratory for Agricultural Biodiversity and Disease Control of the Ministry of education, the Key Laboratory of Plant Pathology of Yunnan Province, Research and Training Center for Potato Crops in Southeast Asia, Crop Resistance Identification Station in Yunnan Province, Yunnan Innovation Personnel Training Base for Biodiversity and Biotechnology, academician workstation, and excellent teaching studio. Under the leadership of academician Zhu Youyong, the major has built a personnel training system in specialty of invasive biology and plant quarantine, focusing on the ecosystem security barrier construction and regional development in Southwest China, initiated from undergraduate to Master's, PhD and Postdoc levels.

The main core courses of this major are Plant Pathology, Entomology, Plant Pests Quarantine, Plant Diseases Quarantine, Phytochemical Protection, Weed Science, Plant Inspection and Quarantine Regulations, Pesticide Residue Detection and Control, and Agricultural Pests Monitoring and Warning, etc. To cultivate students to compound application-oriented high-quality professional and technical personnel with solid basic theories, knowledge and skills on plant quarantine, and be qualified to engage in inspection, teaching, scientific research, management and agricultural material marketing in inspection and quarantine institutions at all levels, agricultural production and export bases, trading companies, health and epidemic prevention departments, environmental protection departments, plant protection departments, food safety inspection and quarantine departments, universities, scientific research institutes, and relevant government departments.

Relying on the National Huang Danian-model Teaching Team in Universities and the national teaching teams, the major has built a team with 22 teachers, including 7 professors and 10 associate professors, 76.0% ofwhich with PhD degrees, and 52% of teachers is under the age of 45, with a reasonable composition of the professional title, age, and educational background among the team. There are 4 academic and technical leaders of Yunnan Province, 1 teacher in the thousand talents plan, 1 teacher in "Top talents" Youth, and 1 teacher in Outstanding Young University Teachers and 1 teacher in Teacher's Ethics Model of Colleges and Universities. There are 5 PhD supervisors and 12 Masters’ supervisor in the major. Teachers of the major adhere to the combination of theory and practical application, strengthen external exchange and cooperation, take social demand as the guidance, and actively explore the talent training mode in line with the law of talent demand in the frontier; promote teaching through scientific research, and strengthen the construction of two innovative teams of "Invasive Biology" and "Plant Quarantine", so as to continuously improve the level of scientific research and teaching quality. Remarkable achievements have been made in pest risk analysis, monitoring and early warning of alien pests, pest prevention and integrated utilization, which are positive contributions to ensure agricultural biosafety in Yunnan and promote the construction of China ASEAN Free Trade Area.
